GAMES – it’s only an exhibition if you don’t play along …
In collaboration with the game store Fanatic, the Roskilde Role-Playing Guild and numerous artists, GAMES invites players and museum guests to immerse themselves in the alternative universes of games and role-playing games, test themselves and maybe even emerge with new experiences that can be translated into this world.
The exhibition series GAMES takes a playful approach to the overlap between art and games. Through collaborations with a large number of artists and gaming communities, GAMES explores art and games based on the underlying idea that the two have much in common in terms of creating new and unknown worlds.
GAMES consists of 4 parts. Three of the four rounds take place in the Museum of Contemporary Art’s exhibition rooms, while the fourth is presented entirely through the medium of sound as sound works and talks made available in the museum’s Podcast for Samtidskunst.
PART 3 HAS OPENED:
The exhibition takes place in the future, long after the pandemic changed the world forever. From that future, the exhibition looks back at our present
and tries to understand this lost era, where social interactions such as Larp (live action role play) were possible and widespread. Through various archaeological finds and remnants of the role plays of the past, the exhibition tries to make heads and tails of what the social and cultural past before the pandemic looked like.
The first room of the exhibition invites you to engage in a series of exercises to help you step into the future fiction and consider who you are and what your role should be. One of the voices you encounter is one of the so-called caretakers responsible for guarding the relics of the past:
“...the caretakers motto goes : Memorandum Memento which translates into common English as Remember to Remember […] The future moves so fast, so much so, that most people today refuse to care for the past as they are too busy with the future. […] we invite people to imagine themselves back
in the past where individuals roamed with bodies, names, roles, realities and their own power to act individually upon each other, for and against.”
The installations were created by Mark Durkan and Francis Patrick Brady with collaborative contributions from Nina Runa Essendrop and Oona Libens. Francis Patrick Brady’s sound piece The Caretakers is featured in the phone booth in the main room. Adjacent to this, Una Hamilton Helle’s Tune Into Plant Being is featured in its own room. In the final room is the video Casual Cult Creation by Mark Durkan and Arm by Fabian Kjær alongside the publication Limited Hangouts edited by Mark Durkan and Francis Patrick Brady and designed by Wilfred Wagner. In addition Daniel Würtz Møbjergs’ Buggy was featured in the courtyard and was the scene for a live action roleplay event on the opening night.
