Concert with Torben Ulrich (vocals/texts & effects) & Søren Kjærgaard (piano)
Roskilde Library & Museum of Contemporary Art are joining forces to offer this unique concert. The last time the museum invited the duo to Roskilde in March 2009, it was an outstanding event in an almost overcrowded Convent House.
"Meridiana: Lines toward a non-local Alchemy" is the third release in the fertile duo collaboration between the pianist and composer Soren Kjaergaard and the interdisciplinary artist and former professional tennis player Torben Ulrich. The record marks the end of a trilogy that includes "Suddenly, Sound" (2009) and "Alphabet, Peaceful, Diminished" (2010).
The project examines the line as respectively an auditory, textual and visual phenomenon. Based on four literary voices: the Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza (1632-1677), the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze (1925-1995) and the Chinese Taoists Lü Yan (829-874) and Sun Bu'er (1119-1182), a multiplicity of meanings and accents will be interwoven in a rich network of musical, textual and graphic lines.
The compositional starting point is a string quartet (4 voices) written by Soren Kjaergaard, partly where the line unfolds in a performative movement coordination between musician and instrument, and partly where the instrument itself is perceived as a topographical intersection of verticals (strings) and horizontals (arch) lines: longitudines and latitudes.
