Milena Hoegsberg appointed Director at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denmark

News

Milena Hoegsberg takes over as the new Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, in Roskilde, Denmark. She replaces outgoing director Birgitte Kirkhoff Eriksen, who has lead the museum for seven years.

Starting August 1, Hoegsberg will lead the development of an ambitious transformational strategy to reimagine the Museum of Contemporary Art as a “museum without walls,” a process that has been kickstarted with the project series Bubbles, featuring 15 new public art commissions throughout the city of Roskilde.

A NEW ERA FOR THE MUSEUM

The Museum of Contemporary Art, which has given up its permanent location in the Royal Palace, will continue to organize and commission ambitious art projects in collaboration with Danish and international artists, but going forward the museum’s productions can be experienced in different locations, indoors and outdoors, in person and online.

In its new itinerant form, the museum aims to be present, visible and sustainable by prioritizing engagement with community and cultural stakeholders and by commissioning projects with and for people, including those who do not necessarily visit museums. The museum’s website will also be developed, establishing a digital gathering place for local, national, and international visitors. Thus, the new director will be a frontrunner for a reimagining of the museum.

“I am thrilled to be entrusted with the exciting challenge of leading the Museum of Contemporary Art as it reinvents itself. Together with the team, I look forward to exploring what it means to be a nomadic museum with a permanent collection. Roskilde has a strong tradition for collaborations, and I am excited to expand on that work and forge new partnerships in commissioning new projects and creating contemporary art experiences that are open and relevant to more people,” says Hoegsberg.

Milena Hoegsberg brings solid curatorial and leadership experience to her new position, from the Henie Onstad Kunstsenter in Norway, where she was chief curator and department head, as well as from LIAF (Lofoten International Art Festival), and Holbæk Art. Over the years, she has produced new, large-scale works in collaboration with artists such as Lea Porsager, Sondra Perry, Cayetano Ferrer, Youmna Chlala, and Ane Graff. Milena Hoegsberg holds a BA in Art History from Columbia University and an MA in Curatorial Studies from CCS, Bard College.

“The board is very pleased to welcome Milena Hoegsberg as the new director of the Museum of Contemporary Art. Milena brings strong professional qualifications to the table, and her international experience, excellent network, and art historical background will give the museum the energy and strength required to lift the institution into a new era. Milena is enthusiastic about the Museum of Contemporary Art in its entirety with all that this entails in terms of local roots, building up a community around art, as well as national and international perspectives,” says board chair Christina Wilson.

About the Museum of Contemporary Art

The Museum of Contemporary Art was established in 1991, born out of the Fluxus related festival Festival of Fantastics in the 1980s. The museum has historically supported the production of experimental, sound, and performance art, and has a small contemporary collection. In 2021, it became an itinerant museum, without a permanent exhibition building.
