Better grades through a visit to the museum
Interview with Mette Marie Dons Christensen, who teaches Art and History at Roskilde Gymnasium.
"They might not remember everything I´ve said throughout the year, but they remember their visit to the museum" says Mette Marie Dons Christensen, who brings her student to the Museums of Conetmporary Art each semester.
The students´visit is above all Mette Maries way of giving them a real experience with art. Her aim is to normalize a visit and to show that everyone can come as they are.
The students get engaged with the artworks they meet. They get hands-on-experience, which helps them to practice their analytical skills and see the world from different perpectives. It also supports them and gives them the courage to express their own thoughts. It applies to Art and History, but also to other subjects, as well as life in general. Mette Marie has also observed that it has helped her students particularly in their oral exams, where the artworks often have come up as examples.
A film by Kirsten Astrup with the title Urolige hjerte (eng. Restless Hearts) was shown to one of Mette Marie´s group of students in 2018. The exhibition got many of the students so excited about contemporary art that they even got interested in applying to The Art Academy.
